The art of the made-to-order chair.
A 115-year-old American workroom, building custom upholstery and case goods one piece at a time, in collaboration with the world's most distinguished interior designers.
Hickory, North Carolina.
For more than a century, Hickory Chair has been built by people who live within a short drive of the workroom that bears its name. We were founded in 1911 in Hickory, North Carolina — a town that became the quiet capital of American furniture-making for the same reason it began: access to hardwood, skilled hands, and a culture that takes craft seriously.
Every upholstered piece we ship is built to order. Frames are kiln-dried eight-way hand-tied hardwood, hand-sprung, and trimmed by people whose names we know. We do not maintain inventory in the conventional sense. A chair leaves our floor when, and only when, a designer asks for it.
Made For You.
Made For You® is our customer-facing name for what the rest of the industry would call build-to-order. It means a piece begins as a conversation — with a designer, with a representative, with our workroom — and ends as a single object made for one room. Lengths adjust by inches. Frames re-proportion. Arms swap. Skirts shorten.
The cost of this approach is time. The reward is that nothing leaves our floor that wasn't asked for, and nothing arrives in a room that doesn't belong to it.
Designer Collaborations
The collections are designed by the people you already follow.
"Hickory Chair is one of the few American workrooms still doing this. When something feels right in a room, you can usually trace it back to a frame that someone in North Carolina was paid to build by hand."— Veranda
